Description
Glenside Hospital, Top Lodge is a lodge built around 1861, with a later extension. It features coursed, squared Pennant rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The building has a single-depth, T-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range. The earlier corner block has rusticated quoin strips, a rubble plinth, a plat band, and ashlar ridge stacks linked by an arch with cornices. The deep eaves and verges add to its architectural character.
The openings include keyed, round-arched heads with ovolo moulds and flat jambs, while the extension windows have segmental heads. To the left, there is a door with a fanlight, a single-light ground-floor window, a similar window above the door, and a two-light projecting eaves dormer on brackets. The left return features a three-light canted ground-floor bay with a three-light window above, along with two-light ground- and first-floor windows. The windows are 4/4 sash. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, Glenside Hospital was originally built as Stapleton Lunatic Asylum.
