Description

Numbers 14, 15, and 16 are a terrace of three houses built between 1766 and 1771 by Thomas Paty. They are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, featuring brick stacks and a pantile mansard roof. The buildings rise three storeys, with a basement and attic, and each house has three windows, except for No. 16, which has two. The design reflects the Mid Georgian style, characterized by pilasters, a cornice, and a parapet. The entrance doorcases on the right have pediments with Gibbs surrounds and raised keyed entablatures, along with four-panel doors and rectangular overlights. The windows have Gibbs surrounds with keys to 6/6-pane sashes, which are smaller on the second floor, and there are two dormers. The entrance to No. 16, located on Cumberland Road, features attached Doric columns supporting a modillion pediment and a plate-glass fanlight, all set within a symmetrical pedimented elevation. To the right of this entrance is a two-storey ancillary block with round ground-floor windows. Inside No. 14, there is a central lateral dogleg stair, fluted pilasters leading to segmental arches in the ground-floor rooms, modillion cornices, and panelled shutters. The terrace is complemented by cast-iron railings to the areas. The west side of the square differs from the designs on the south and east sides, and the remainder of the terrace was never completed.
