Description

A parade of shops and an hotel, dating from the 1870s. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and brick, with brick ridge stacks and a pantile roof. It follows a double-depth plan and is arranged over three storeys, with a two-window range. The design is symmetrical, featuring gables at each end and a pair in the centre, which project forward. The gabled sections have paired, banded columns with foliate capitals to either side of the ground floor, with a central column, while single columns frame the ground floors of the shops between. A dentil cornice runs above the fascia, some sections incorporating cast-iron railings. The windows have banded columns below stilted heads with dog teeth, bracketed cills, and plate-glass sashes, and the gables have attics with paired windows and scalloped barge-boards. The interior features a dogleg staircase with stick balusters. A raised pavement of Pennant flags extends in front of the building. This is an imposing and well-detailed terrace front.
