Description

This is a house, later adapted as a British Telecom training centre, built in 1905. Designed by F Bligh Bond, it is constructed of brick with limestone dressings, brick stacks, and a Cornish slate roof. The building is arranged as a double-depth plan and is in the Edwardian Baroque style. It is two storeys and an attic, with a five-window front. The symmetrical facade features quoins and a projecting central section topped with a swan-neck segmental pediment resting on scrolled corbels, and an oculus within a swagged panel. A two-storey, fully-glazed oriel stair light is also present. The windows have rubbed brick flat-arches with grotesque key stones over 12/12-pane sash windows; a plat band runs along the ground floor, and shutters are included. Deep eaves have brackets and swagged, scrolled corner brackets. Five dormers feature alternating triangular and segmental pediments with casement windows, and an open square cupola sits atop the roof. The right-hand elevation has a projecting, parapeted porch with Ionic columns featuring barleysugar fluting, a bracketed segmental canopy with coffering, and a semicircular-arched doorway with a timber fanlight and a six-panel door. A semicircular-arched two-light arcade is to the left of the porch. Further right, a symmetrical elevation steps forward and includes a 12/12-pane ground-floor sash window flanked by oculi, and a semicircular-arched central first-floor window. Inside, the central hall has arched openings and an oval ceiling panel. A dogleg staircase features square, moulded balusters and newels.
