Description
The Priory is a domestic building in Shirehampton, believed to be linked to a medieval priory. It is thought to date from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, and it was remodelled around 1980. The structure features a render over a timber frame, gable stacks, and a sprocketed pantile roof, with an L-shaped double-depth plan. The front of the building is symmetrical in a Georgian style, featuring a 20th-century porch leading to a late 18th-century half-glazed door with a rectangular overlight that has round glazing bars, along with two narrow windows that have margin bars. The ground floor has late 20th-century tripartite windows, while the first floor has 8/8-pane windows and casement dormers. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a fine hall roof with arch-braced construction and cusped wind-braces arranged in three tiers. There is no documentary evidence to confirm its connection to any monastery buildings. However, the introduction of a hard, patterned render and late 20th-century windows has compromised the historic surface texture and character of the building.
