Description
Nos. 84 and 85 Cumberland Road are a pair of attached houses built around 1840. They are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a slate roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and display a late Georgian style with Greek Revival-style decoration. Each house has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a two-window range.
The front elevation is tall and includes a shallow full-width pediment. There are single-storey side entrance porches and a prominent niche in the center, which has a panelled sill and a bracketed lintel adorned with acroteria. The porches feature pilasters supporting an entablature with acroteria, six-panel doors with round middle panels, and semicircular-arched side windows with margin bars. The windows are fitted with 6/6-pane sashes with thin bars, while the second floor has 3/3-pane windows.
Inside, the entrance hall leads to a lateral steep dogleg winder stair with stick balusters, column newels, and a steeply ramped rail. The interior also includes six-panel doors, panelled shutters, fluted marble fireplaces with roundels, and ceiling roses.
