Description

This building, occupied by Wickham and Morris, is an office constructed in the early 19th century with later alterations. It features a roughcast and brick exterior, a gable stack, and a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a two-window range. There are two gables facing the river, each with one window. The right-hand gable is made of brick and has wide segmental-arched 20th-century windows, while the left-hand gable is roughcast and includes a square oriel with a 26/26-pane sash, which is a notable feature of 19th-century offices. To the left, there is a roughcast exterior stack. Inside, the ground floor and staircase are panelled, featuring stick balusters and an uncut string. Historically, it is reputed to have been used by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as his drawing office during the construction of the SS Great Britain. This building is recognized as a complete example of its type and is valued for its historical significance.
