Description

Pokesdown United Reformed Church and Sunday School is a former Congregational church built in 1820 and rebuilt in 1895-1896, reflecting a Regency style. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring stucco and buff brick dressings. Its pedimented front is distinguished by giant Ionic columns positioned between antae, which support an entablature. The tall windows are framed in shouldered stucco and are topped with relieving arches. The church has hipped annexes with pilaster-strip quoins and a grey brick eaves cornice, which contain stucco doorways adorned with a bulgy frieze and cornice, as well as paired round-arched windows with red terracotta hoodmoulds and sills. The flanks include lean-to aisles that have similar pilaster strips, eaves, and round-arched windows, along with a continuous clerestory strip featuring arched glazing bars. At the rear, there is an attached hall that includes some stucco pilasters and hoodmoulds on the north side, and a gabled porch on the south side. The church is set within an old graveyard.
