Description

The Convent of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also known as Boscombe Convent School's Senior Department, is a former convent built in 1889. It features a large, symmetrical Elizabethan-style E-plan front made of Purbeck rubble. The building has four storeys with shaped gables at the centre and wings, and two storeys plus an attic in between. The entrance porch is adorned with sculptured angels that are adoring a cross in the spandrels, and there is a canted oriel above. The windows are mostly stone-mullioned, with three-light or two-light configurations, both featuring transoms.

The rear of the building is asymmetrical, with the north wing containing two narrow transverse gables and a far-projecting central wing that ends in shaped gables. The shorter south wing connects to the chapel and has a transverse shaped gable along with one ordinary transverse gable. The chapel is designed in an Early English style with five bays and lancet windows set within a continuous arcade of large blind relieving arches. Atop the building is a gabled bellcote with a fleche on the ridge.
