Description
The Roman Catholic Church of the Corpus Christi was built between 1895 and 1896 by architect J W Lunn of Great Malvern for Baroness Pauline von Hugel. This church features a tall tower with an octagonal belfry, which was added between 1932 and 1935 by W C Mangan, who also extended the nave. Designed in an Early English style, the church is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It has a six-bay nave supported by double-chamfered arches on octagonal columns, with paired lancet windows in the aisles that include hoodmoulds and a stringcourse, as well as a lancet clerestory.
The church includes a polygonal baptistry at the south-west, along with two polygonal chapels off the aisles. The chancel consists of two bays with a polygonal apse, where detached stone colonnettes of the inner arches of the lancets extend down to a stringcourse just above the altar. The apse is also present in the south chapel, and there is a transeptal chapel to the north. Inside, there is a brass memorial to Baroness von Hugel, who died in 1901, created by Hardman.
