Description
Bournemouth East Cemetery Chapels were built in 1897, designed by architect F W Lacey, who was the Borough Engineer. The chapels follow the typical layout of Church of England and Non-Conformist chapels connected by a central former porch. The design features a notable Rayonnant style spire, while the rest of the structure is in Early English styles. The materials used include rough-faced rubble, with decorative ashlar quoins and dressings, and the spire is made of Portland stone. The roofs are tiled. The layout is not symmetrical, with a gable and a lancet triplet on the right-hand chapel and a short link passage to the left-hand chapel. There is an angled bay to the northeast. The main feature is the spire, which rises from a gabled arcade adorned with pinnacles. The three-stage tower has pierced parapets and corner finials, along with an unusual combination of diagonal and corner buttresses. There is a large two-light decorated window in the belfry, and below it, a gabled image niche that houses a statue. The main entrance is topped with a triangular label.
