Description
Hurn Court is a large house with an irregular plan and various construction dates, located on the site of a medieval grange of Christchurch Priory. The earliest visible work dates from the late 16th century and represents an early example of brickwork in the area. The house was altered in 1806 by Garbett of Southampton and again around 1840. It features plastered walls and chimney stacks, with a parapet and slate roofs. The main block is E-shaped and symmetrically designed, with coped gables and finials on the outer wings. The house has three storeys, with the top storey added to the two-storey Elizabethan house in 1840, along with an extra west wing. There is also an additional attic floor with dormers. The exterior includes string courses, outer windows with dripstone moulds, and mullions, with a transom at the first floor. The two-storey central porch has buttresses and a gable, with a cartouche in the tympanum and a ribbed, Gothic arched door. Inside, there are ribbed plaster ceilings, some featuring heraldic devices, doors with Gothic panels, and a staircase with twisted balusters and a carved handrail. The listed buildings in the grounds of Hurn Court form a group.
