Description

These are a pair of houses on Church Street, Poole, likely rebuilt in the late 18th century but incorporating elements of a probable earlier, medieval building. The front is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with a brick gable stack slightly set back from the gable and tile hanging to the top of the gable. A rear wall of squared, coursed limestone rubble remains and is visible within the building, and the roof is tiled. The houses have a single-depth plan. They are two storeys high and have a six-window front. A probable medieval rubble rear wall contains a small, round window. The front has doorways on either side of a central window, with the right-hand door and flanking windows featuring 20th-century joinery. Segmental arched openings contain a six-panel door and 6/6-pane sash windows set in exposed, flush frames. There are three hipped dormers with tile-hung sides. Inside, a rear right-hand winder stair is present, alongside cupboards with HL hinges flanking the fireplace. The roof displays what may be former ship's knee braces bolted to collars, and butt purlins. The rear walls are unusually thick. The building is listed primarily for the historical interest of the medieval rear wall and has group value with the other houses around the churchyard.
