Description
Westbourne Library is a well-detailed Arts and Crafts public building constructed in 1912. The building has been somewhat diminished by the recent replacement of the central window with a glazed entrance, while the original entrance at the side, featuring a segmental hood on paired console brackets, is now blocked. The library is built from red brick with stone dressings and has a half-timbered gable at the front that displays a coat-of-arms in plaster. It features a dominant hipped roof covered in tiles, with a white timber cornice, and is accentuated at the corners by small square towers made of brick and stone. Similar towers also separate the bays that contain mullioned windows along the long south flank. At the center, there is a copper cupola topped with a decorative weathercock, resting on a tall leaded base. The building also showcases good spoutheads and neat grooved tooling of the stonework.
