Description
Westbourne Arcade is a well-preserved polychrome Gothic shopping arcade dating from 1884-5, built by Henry Joy. It includes numbers 69 and 71 and numbers 29 and 31 Seamoor Road. The arcade has symmetrical facades to Poole Road and Seamoor Road, constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The entrance features three round-headed arches, the central one taller and with half-glazing, using alternating brick and stone voussoirs under pointed relieving arches. A cornice extends over the central arch, leading to a gable raised stone erection. Decorative ironwork spans the central arch, above the former location of gates. Wings project around quadrant corners, hosting ground-floor shops with classical pilasters; original details are unaltered on the Seamoor Road frontage. The first floor has round-arched windows with alternating brick and stone voussoirs, and coupled round-headed windows with an "H J" monogram in the spandrels under relieving arches and gables. The buildings are topped with recessed chateau roofs.
Inside, the arcade gently curves; arched glazing bars to the shops are largely intact. The first floor displays buff brick with red brick bands and a stone frieze along the lintels, featuring grotesque corbel heads to the cornice. A glazed roof incorporates arched braces and a small pitched-roofed lantern, with a criss-cross of iron tiebeams centrally held by dominant foliage bosses of iron.
