Description
Herbert Hospital, originally the Herbert Memorial Convalescent Home, was built between 1865 and 1867 by T H Wyatt. This building features a skillfully designed asymmetrical Gothic style, constructed from Purbeck stone with red brick bands, and is characterized by mostly mullioned windows. The entrance includes a porch-tower topped with a statue and clock set in a diamond frame, along with a short spire that has lucarnes and a brick and stone machicolated cornice. The entrance side has few windows, emphasizing the horizontal lines created by the hipped roofs, brick bands, and stop-chamfered corners.
The east wing is connected by a single-storey link to the former chapel, which has traceried windows and a cupola, and is flanked by a lower room with bow windows. The west wing features a canted bay that faces down the drive and has three gables on the south side. The center of the south front is almost symmetrical, though not aligned with the entrance, and includes two two-storey canted bays with red brick spandrels, along with a single-storey south-east wing. The chimneys contrast with stucco and Italianate styles, featuring bracketed cornices and openwork frames for the pots. Additionally, there is an Edwardian summerhouse made of white timber, built around 1910, which has battered corners and a splayed hipped roof, and is detached from the main building.
