Description

10 and 12 Market Street is a former house, now divided into two, with one part serving as an office. The building is dated 1762, as noted on a hopper, and was divided in the late 18th century. It features header bond brickwork with a stone plinth, stucco quoins and dressings, brick gable stacks, and a tiled roof. The structure has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a window arrangement of three on one side and two on the other.

The exterior includes a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a moulded, bracketed eaves cornice. There are paired round-arched doorways with attached columns leading to entablature blocks and open pediments. The original doorway to No. 10 features fluted columns decorated with urns, a radial fanlight, and panelled reveals and soffits. The later inserted doorway to No. 12 is narrower, with acanthus leaf capitals and a six-panel door, along with a left-hand bootscraper. The windows have split keys in gauged brick segmental heads, with six-over-six pane sashes and two hipped dormers with eared cheeks. A central leaded hopper is inscribed with WB/1762. The rear of the building has keyed cambered heads to flush sashes and a central lower stair light.

The interior includes a through passage divided by a semicircular arch leading to a rear dogleg stair with column-on-vase balusters. The ground-floor right-hand room is fully panelled, featuring niches flanking a 20th-century fireplace and an egg and dart cornice. The upper floor has not been inspected.
