Description
No. 3 Market Street, formerly known as Lawton House, is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of header bond brick with gauged brick arches, an ashlar plinth, a tile-hung gable, and a hipped tiled roof. The building has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring a three-window range.
The exterior includes a plinth, cornice, and parapet. The left-hand round-arched doorway is adorned with attached Doric columns supporting an open modillion pediment, a keyed arch, a good fanlight, and a six-panel door. The windows have flat gauged brick arches with split keys and plate-glass sashes, while there is a blind central window on the first floor. A segmental-arched cellar door is located on the right side, and there are two hipped dormers with cheekboards.
The interior has been largely altered in the late 20th century, but it retains original HL hinges on the front door and features a rebuilt central lateral stair.
