Description
This is a late 16th-century house on Market Street, Poole, originally built for Thomas Bingley, who was Mayor of Poole. It was later divided and altered in the mid-18th century, with a rear service wing added in the early 19th century and further alterations made in the late 20th century. The original construction was of rendered coursed squared rubble and timber framing, although the render has been removed, leaving large rubble sections. The property features a left-hand stack with a 17th-century brick extension that has panelled sides. It has a tiled roof.
Originally designed as a 2-room parallel plan, the house is now divided into two separate dwellings, with a rear service wing. The front facade has a plinth and, on the right-hand side, a doorway with a bracketed canopy extending onto the adjacent property at No.8. A ground-floor window features 15 lights with mullions and a transom. Above this is a bracketed, first-floor oriel window with 10 lights, also using mullions and a transom, and a hipped dormer with a 2-light window. The windows are fitted with lattice leaded casements. The rear of the property contains a ground-floor outshut with a small dormer, and a northwest-gabled, 2-storey wing, paired with that of No.8.
The interior retains features from various periods. These include a framed, closed-well stair with wattle and daub panels, an early 18th-century bolection-moulded fire surround, and plank and muntin first-floor panelling and partitions. The house was formerly known as Bingley House and was once connected to No.4.
