Description

The Hovel is an early to mid-18th century house located on Market Street, Poole. It is stuccoed with an ashlar plinth, a tall brick gable stack on the left-hand side, and a hipped tiled roof. The house follows a two-room right-angle plan and has two storeys with an attic. The front elevation has a two-window range. The right-hand doorway is framed by an eared, moulded architrave with a flat canopy, now housing a late 20th-century door. There are six-pane sash windows in flush, moulded frames. Boxed eaves and a hipped dormer with a three-pane sash are also present.

Inside, the front room fireplace is reported to have Delft tiles, a moulded architrave, and a moulded dentil cornice. A winder staircase is situated to the rear of the stack.

Historically, The Hovel was built as an infill between numbers 2 and 6 Market Street. It was originally connected internally to number 6, sharing its substantial brick stack.
