Description
Bowden House is a house dating from the mid 18th century. It is built of header bond brick with party wall brick stacks and a tiled roof. The house has a single-depth plan with heated rooms on either side of a central staircase. It stands two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and features a five-window range. The double-fronted design includes a low plinth and a brick cornice, with a round-arched doorway that has attached columns supporting entablature blocks beneath an open pediment adorned with ball dentils. The entrance features a fanlight and a panelled door, with panelled reveals and soffit. There are flat gauged-brick keyed arches over late 19th-century recessed plate-glass sash windows, a cambered arched basement opening on the left, and two large hipped dormers added in the mid 20th century. The rear of the house has two hipped dormers and a mid 20th-century extension to the northeast. Inside, the property reportedly contains a central dogleg staircase and original features such as a fireplace, cornices, and doorcases. The cellar has stone walls and chamfered beams.
