Description
The Town Bridge is a road bridge over the River Avon, built in the 15th or 16th century. It has undergone repairs and strengthening over the years, including widening around 1900 and the addition of a footbridge on the north side in 1950, which is not included in the listing.
The bridge is made of limestone and ironstone ashlar, with the north elevation entirely constructed of limestone. It features five round-headed arches; the arches on the downstream (south) side have two orders, with inner voussoirs made of limestone, matching the bridge's body, and outer voussoirs of ironstone. The arches on the north side are flush with the bridge's face. There is a pointed cutwater between each arch, with six on the downstream side and four on the upstream side, topped by a parapet. The mid-20th century cantilevered footbridge on the north side is anchored to the older structure but is not of special interest.
