Description

This wrought iron arch is located within Victoria Park, approximately 60 metres south of number 18 Brock Street. It dates to around 1837 with later embellishments. The arch spans a pedestrian access to the park and likely served as a former gate. It features a semicircular wrought iron arch supported on each side by paired spearhead railings, horizontally linked to the arch at three points. A ball at the arch’s apex is topped with a slender finial flanked by fine wrought iron scrolls, which are attached to the arch via rings. To the east side, there are double-paired railings and a swept support to the base. The decorative scrollwork at the top of the arch, known as the overthrow, is inspired by pre-Georgian designs and probably originates from a later embellishment programme. Victoria Park itself was laid out in 1830 on former common land, known as Barton Fields, and was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria on October 23rd, 1830, making it the country’s first municipal park.
