Description
The Kemble vase is a large limestone basin located approximately 80 meters south of Brock Street in Royal Victoria Park. It dates from the mid-19th century and features a shallow basin that is nearly 2 meters in diameter. The basin has a moulded rim adorned with an eroded Vitruvian scroll, and radiating acanthus leaves rise from a circular cornice at its base. The fluted base expands into a square pedestal with a cornice and an eroded inscription on the south side, which notes its donation by S.S.V. Pieroni. This exceptionally large basin showcases the capabilities of Bath stone and is a significant feature in the park's decoration. Victoria Park was established in 1830 on the former Barton Fields, a common land area, and was inaugurated by the Duchess of Kent and her daughter, Princess Victoria, on October 23rd, 1830, making it the country's first municipal park.
