Description
A terrace of three early 19th-century houses. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar, with slate roofs and concrete tiles to number 20. They are double-depth in plan with a central valley. Each house has three storeys and a basement, with two windows to the front. The second floor windows are six-pane sashes, while those on the first floor have twelve panes, set in moulded architraves with a cornice. The ground floor windows are single, plain sashes. Number 20 has a basement with glazed lean-to roof covering the basement lights, while the other properties have paved forecourts. Number 20 features a channelled square porch with a cornice and blocking course, while numbers 22 and 24 have panelled doors set in deep reveals. The ground floor is channelled and has a deep platband carrying paired giant Doric pilasters to the outer bays, which are slightly stepped forward. A threaded sill band runs across the second floor, and there’s an entablature with a blocking course and a parapet, slightly raised over the end bays. Each party wall has a coped gable with a deep ashlar stack. The interiors have not been inspected. Simple spiked railings on a stone curb run across the frontage, returning at number 22 and extending around the basement area of number 20, although there are no gates. These houses were originally intended to be a central feature within a terrace of twenty-one houses, but only fourteen were built, and this group has slightly richer architectural detail than the others.
