Description

The mausoleum to Ralph Allen, located in the churchyard to the south of St. Mary's Church, is a significant structure dating from the 18th century. It is believed to have been designed by Robert Parsons and commemorates Ralph Allen of Prior Park and Claverton, who died in 1764.

This mausoleum is a square building made of ashlar stone, featuring three arches supported by square piers with moulded imposts on each side; these arches are currently infilled with railings. The roof is a pyramidal stone slab set behind an ashlar parapet, and there is a moulded cornice along the top. Inside, the roof is vaulted, and at the center lies a chest tomb with inscribed marble sides, along with a moulded plinth and cornice. The mausoleum is elevated on two steps. Notably, architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner noted that Parsons presented the designs to Allen just a day before his passing.
