Description

Nos. 172 and 172A Wellbourne Cottage is a pair of cottages located on Wellsway, dating from the early to mid 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The cottages are built from limestone ashlar and have a roof covered with double Roman tiles or slate. They are designed as a plain block with a central valley to the double roof, elevated above the road and supported by a retaining wall, with a later unit to the left that is not included in the listing.

The exterior features two storeys, each with two windows, all of which are four-pane sashes set in plain reveals. On the left side, there is a six-panel door in a deep arched reveal with a sunk surround, accompanied by a decorative fanlight. To the right, there is a late 20th-century flat-roofed porch over a similar door. The cottages have coped gables, with a stack on the right and a central ridge stack. The roof is divided into two sections, with the right side having a low-pitched slate roof and the left side featuring a higher-pitched tiled roof. The design includes a broad mid-band, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet, while the exposed northern gables are plain. The interiors have not been inspected.
