Description
Woodfield Cottage, formerly known as Wakefield Cottage, is a Gothick house located to the north of Bloomfield Crescent, dating from around 1800. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double Roman tile roof.
The house has a T-shaped plan with a wider front facing the road and a projecting central bay on the north-west slope. The front elevation is three storeys high, while the rear has three storeys plus a lower ground floor facing west. The road front includes two twelve-pane sash windows, although there are blind lights painted on the left side at the second and ground floors, and a broad six-pane sash window on the lower right. A centrally placed 20th-century door is set beneath a slab hood with reeded edges. The façade is decorated with two platbands, a thin cornice, and a crenellated parapet that steps up to the right, along with coped gables featuring ashlar stacks atop hipped roofs. The right side of the building has a narrow gable end with platbands, which then steps back to a wing containing paired nine-pane sashes under an ogee lintel, along with a pair of painted blind lights. The rear range is splayed back and includes a terrace at mid-height.
The boundary wall to the right is made of coursed stonework with plain coping, ramping down and rising from approximately 3 to 4 metres in height.
This picturesque house is designed to take full advantage of its prominent hillside location. The architect Masters, who designed Bloomfield Crescent, may have contributed to its design, as he is known for creating Gothick houses in other locations.
