Description

The building at 29 Monmouth Street is a pair of terrace houses, originally dating to the late 18th century. It was formerly a public house and was once known as Nos. 29 and 30 Monmouth Street. The exterior is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The building has four storeys and features a two-window front joined to a three-window front, with glazing-bar sash windows throughout. The attic windows are three-pane with flat-roofed dormers; the dormer above bay three is blind. At the second floor, bay three has a blind window, while the first-floor windows are set within small balconettes, and the first floor features a balcony with a panelled railing. The former pub frontage has four large four-pane sashes, one door with a transom light, and one blocked opening, all set within flat pilasters topped by a full-width entablature. A sill band and cornice run along the second floor, with a further cornice above the attic, a blocking course, and a parapet with coped gables, each containing a chimney stack. An internal inspection in 1990 revealed some original window bars, a central staircase with Doric colonnettes, and Regency detailing.
