Description

This is a mid-18th century terrace house located on Monmouth Street. It is a double-depth property, originally three windows wide, and extends over three storeys, with an attic and basement. The exterior is constructed of limestone ashlar, with coursed and squared masonry to the gables, and a slate roof. The first floor has three six-over-six pane sash windows set in splayed reveals. The second floor features three smaller six-over-six pane sashes, and two four-pane dormers in a steep mansard roof. The attic window is twelve-pane, also in splayed reveals, apart from the second floor. The basement windows are twenty-pane sashes. The ground floor has two six-over-six pane sashes and a five-panel door with the top panel glazed, set within a moulded architrave and a flat hood supported by consoles, approached by four stone steps. Horizontal mouldings are found at three levels, including the basement, along with a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet. Coped gables and deep stacks are also present. An inspection in 1975 revealed an interior with panelling throughout, and with much original fabric remaining in place. A simple railing on an ashlar curb defines the basement area and extends across the front of the property and around to the doorway.
