Description

No. 24 Monmouth Street, formerly listed as No. 12 Chapel Row, is a terraced house built in the late 18th century, with 20th-century additions. The house features fine ashlar stonework and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and has five windows, all of which are six-over-six sash windows. There are three two-light small-pane casement dormers above the windows, set in plain reveals, with floating cornices and a central pediment at the first floor. The ground floor has moulded architraves with a cornice, and there are one or two sash windows in the basement.

The central entrance has a six-panel door accessed by three stone steps and a landing, framed by a Roman Doric doorcase with an entablature and pediment. The three central bays of the facade are slightly stepped forward and feature an inflected moulded cornice, without blocking course and parapet. To the right, there is a cropped stack on the coped gable, and a broad stack at the eaves on the left side at the rear. The roof returns with a hipped end towards Chapel Row, which has a blind light above a deep twelve-pane sash window and a 20th-century three-light display front. There is a straight joint in the masonry connecting it to No. 12 Chapel Row, with continuous cornice and parapet details.

Across the front and returning to the ends and central doorway, there is spearhead railing on a curb to the basement areas. Although Monmouth Street was laid out in 1727 as part of John Strahan's speculative development, this building appears to have been constructed at a later date. The interior has not been inspected.
