Description

4 Princes Street is a mid-to-late 18th century house in a row. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a roof that is not visible. The building is similar in design to the adjoining number 3, but smaller in scale, and includes an arched throughway to the left, which was later raised to two floors. The main house is rectangular, with a bay to the left that is open to the splayed wall of that adjoining property.

The house has three storeys and a basement, displaying a facade of one plus three windows. The windows are sash, with six-pane glazing at the second floor and twelve-pane glazing to the first floor, all set within moulded architraves. Bay two is blind at each level. The ground floor incorporates a later oriel display window with a late 18th century fascia and cornice. To the right of this is a six-panel door set on three steps, and a wide pair of panelled doors within a flat elliptical arch, featuring a keystone, impost, and drip course. A platband is present at ground floor level in bay one, which is slightly stepped forward from the rest of the facade. A band sits on a moulded bed above the first floor, accompanied by a moulded cornice with a blocking course and a parapet swept down from the first bay. A deep and lofty ashlar stack is located to the left.

The interior of the building has not been inspected. Doors to the left open to a courtyard, now covered by added storeys. The courtyard's plan is trapezoidal and runs back at an acute angle to the street line, relative to the adjacent wall of number 3.
