Description

This is a pair of mid to late 18th-century houses, numbered 6 and 7, located on Princes Street. The houses originally formed a symmetrical pair with a steep mansard roof. Number 7 was refenestrated in the mid-19th century and is set back from the properties next door.

The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with rubble gables, and have a slate roof. They are three storeys high, with an attic and basement, each with two windows. A central blind light is located on the second floor. Number 6 has two plastic dormer windows above twelve-pane sashes on the second floor. The first floor has an eight:twelve:eight-pane Palladian window with radial bars, and a plain sash window on the ground floor. Two casements with splayed surrounds are located in the basement. Number 7 has two small-paned casement dormers above sashes on the second floor. The first floor has sashes with four-pane reveals in moulded architraves, and a plain arched sash within a hood mould on pilasters with consoles to the sill. The ground floor and basement have plain sashed windows in splayed surrounds.

The paired six-panel front doors have transom lights, three-pane to Number 7, and are set within moulded architraves under a flat cornice hood. The hood continues as a platband at ground floor level. A moulded cornice with a blocking course and parapet tops the elevation. The gables are coped, with deep ashlar stacks and a small central ridge stack. The interior was not inspected.

Simple iron railings set in a stone curb enclose the basement areas and return to the doorways.
