Description

A mid-19th century terrace of five houses, Malvern Lodge Nos. 1-5, with Malvern Lodge (No. 6) attached to the right. The houses are built of limestone ashlar. They were altered in the 20th century. The overall design is similar to that of Belgrave Terrace.

The houses are two storeys high plus a lower ground floor, each with a two-window front. They feature plate glass sash windows, a continuous coved eaves cornice, raised hoods with decorative stops over the first-floor windows, first-floor sill bands with projecting bracketed sills, a ground-floor platband, a plinth, raised shouldered surrounds and bracketed sills to the ground-floor windows, and five-panel doors glazed to the top, each with a shallow hood supported on consoles. Nos. 1, 2 and 5 have double Roman tile roofs; Nos. 3 and 4 have truncated stacks.

Malvern Lodge has two windows facing the street, similar to those of the terrace, and a half-glazed front door. Unlike the terrace houses, it lacks an eaves cornice, but its first-floor sill band and ground-floor platband continue around the left entrance return. This return has wide eaves and plain bargeboards to two forward-facing gables, each with first-floor windows similar to those on the ground floor of the terrace. A gabled section at the rear steps forward, with a single-storey lean-to in the angle. The interior has not been inspected. Originally the roofs were slate, but some have been replaced with double Roman tiles.
