Description

Byemills Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with a refronting that occurred in the mid 18th century, along with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and is rendered, featuring a pantiled roof with brick gable stacks and a double Roman tiled catslide on the rear roof. The building has an irregular plan due to its accumulation over time and consists of two storeys with three windows, all of which are sashes in exposed boxes, except for a replacement sash on the ground floor right that dates from the 20th century.

The central entrance features a four-panelled door with an overlight, flanked by plain pilasters and a pediment, and is set above a plinth with a high parapet and coping. The right side of the building has a small sash window on the ground floor and a four-pane attic light. Under the catslide, there is a 20-pane sash at the ground floor and a small sash at the first floor. The lower rear wing to the right has two storeys and two windows, with ridge and gable stacks. It features a ground floor plank and batten door in a moulded frame, a porch with a shaped gable, a similar 20-pane sash, and a first floor with a six-pane light and a small sash under the eaves.

To the right, there is probably a former cider room that has a chamfered door frame cut back for the passage of barrels, a door with heavy strap hinges and pierced hearts for ventilation, and a small two-pane light to the right with battered walls. The left side has a four-pane attic light and, under the catslide at the ground floor, a sash in an exposed box, along with a first floor sash with margin glazing. There is also a small single-storey addition with a two-light casement at the ground floor rear.

Two attached additions to the left have a covered area under a pitched pantiled roof, with the ground floor featuring a two-light casement and a heavy plank and batten door, and a single light in the first floor gable end. The storey block to the left has a large 20th-century multi-pane light set in a round-headed recess with a keystone, which is not rendered. The rear of the farmhouse has two rooflights on the main house and two gable ends of earlier buildings. To the left, there is a similar heavy door with strap hinges, a 20th-century two-light casement above it, and a brick gable stack to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
