Description

The former horse trough, now used as a flower container, is located on the south side of London Road West and dates back to 1883. Made of granite, it follows the standard design used by the Metropolitan Cattle Trough and Drinking Fountain Association in London. The raised trough is designed for horses and features a gabled water inlet at the left end, which originally included a drinking fountain for people. Below the main trough is a dog trough situated between the supporting transverse legs. These legs are protected from cartwheels by integral half-round bollards. The upper trough bears the inscription, "Erected by Major CD. BRICKMANN. 1883."
