Description
No. 14 Whyke House is an early 19th century detached villa, now divided into flats. It is constructed from limestone ashlar with an unseen roof. The building has a double-depth plan, incorporating a rear left wing. The symmetrical front facade has five windows, and features a parapet, cornice, and frieze. The ground floor exhibits banded rustication with radial voussoirs rising to a moulded band, and segmental arched recesses containing six-pane sash windows. The front door is a six-panel design with a five-pane overlight, recessed within a prostyle porch featuring an entablature, blocking course, and plain square paired columns connected at the top and bottom to form pierced central panels.
The interior of No. 5, as recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1991, includes a hall with a double inner door and fanlight, and a flagged-stone floor. A cantilevered stone staircase has a carved mahogany handrail, scrolled mahogany newel post, and decorative metal balusters; every sixth baluster is scrolled to the first landing, then every fifth baluster thereafter. A drawing room features an arch with fine scrolling, and a black marble fireplace with grey and tan marbled intrusions. The property includes extensive wine cellars with storage space and racks, and a west drawing room with a white marble fireplace decorated with sheaves and swags.
