Description

Grove Lodge is a three-storey terrace house, now operating as a guest house, built around 1787 and altered in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof and moulded stacks to the gable ends. The house has a double-depth plan.

The exterior has a cornices, lintel and blocking course, to the second floor, a moulded string course over the first floor, and a platband to the ground floor. It features plate glass sash windows. A slightly recessed single-storey entrance bay is positioned to the left, with a semicircular arch over sidelights leading to a six-raised and fielded panelled door, complete with a full-width fanlight. A full-height canted bay extends to the right. A late-19th century lean-to conservatory is attached to the far right. A stone balustrade with gadrooned urns fronts the property.

The interior, recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1993, includes an elaborate cornice in the hall and a turned mahogany newel post featuring a carved head of a lion, which represented the seal of the 19th-century owners. The ground floor rooms contain a black marble fireplace with a cast-iron hob grate and arched alcoves on either side, and a grey veined marble fireplace with a tiled inset, also with arched alcoves on either side. The two rooms retain the remains of a full-width arch, now blocked up. The second-floor drawing room has two grey veined white marble mantelpieces, one with a cast-iron insert and the other with a tiled inset.

The land was sold in 1787 with a condition requiring that the house be built and finished within two years.
