Description

Hartley House is a house dating to the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, topped with a double-pitched slate roof and 20th-century dormers, featuring moulded stacks. The building has a double-depth plan. The main facade is three storeys high with a two-window front. It has a coped parapet and cornice running around the top. The windows are plate glass sashes with splayed reveals, and the right-hand side features a six-panel door with glazed upper panels, set within a pedimented Tuscan doorcase, with a 19th-century bracket above. The left return, originally a three-window front, now has a 19th-century, flat-roofed oriel on the first and second floors, which covers two former window openings. There are three windows to the ground floor, and a 20th-century door is located to the left of centre. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain a good open string staircase with a swept mahogany handrail, wreathed to the base. The hall has modillion cornices with rosettes and a dentil string, plus a ceiling rose with a rope ring mould. Other rooms contain modillion cornices with rosettes. A later, lower block, dating to the late 19th century, is attached to the west, on Lansdown Road (and known as No. 37 Belvedere) and is constructed of machine-cut ashlar.
