Description

No. 109 Southbank is a large detached house dating from 1640, with an addition built in 1740 and later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed of squared limestone rubble with freestone dressings, covered by stone slate and pantile roofs, featuring moulded stacks to coped gable ends. The 1740 main block has a three-unit plan, incorporating a rear stair turret, a two-storey wing to the rear left, and a stable block. The front elevation is three storeys high and has a three-window range, likely refronted in the mid to late 18th century in line with other houses in Weston. It includes a coped parapet, a cornice, raised surrounds to the windows and door, and six/six-pane sash windows to the second floor, while the lower floors feature four/four-pane sashes with some crown glass. The front door is six-panelled and glazed, supported by shaped stone brackets. The rear elevation has a pointed hipped roof over the central stair turret, with label moulds over ovolo moulded stone mullioned three-light casement windows, incorporating 19th-century glazing over a 19th-century pantiled porch. Two first-floor windows on the left return feature fine 18th-century cast iron balconettes. The rear wing has a pantile roof and hoodmoulds over 20th-century windows. The interior was not inspected but is reported to contain panelled shutters. The original 17th-century east wing was restored in the 19th century. It has group value.
