Description
The building is a folly located to the rear of Number 100 on South Street in West Tarring. It was built in the early 19th century, heightened in the mid-19th century, and altered in the later 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of coursed cobblestone with brick dressings, and the roof material is not visible. It is a single cell, square in shape, with two storeys and a basement. The corners and openings feature brick quoins, and there is a brick band between the storeys, an eaves cornice, and an embattled parapet with pitched coping. The lower floors are constructed with red brick, some of which is blue, while the upper floor is made of paler brick, indicating it was built differently.
On the entrance elevation, there is a segmental-arched opening for the basement. Above this, cantilevered stone steps lead to a doorway that features a 20th-century stable door set beneath a soldier-brick arch. To the left of the doorway, there is a blocked pointed-arched window. The upper floor has a later, wide, three-light window with a header-brick arch and wooden casements that include pointed-arched glazing bars.
At the rear, there is a pointed-arched window on the ground floor with two four-pane lights and glazing bars in the head, while the upper storey has a segmental-arched casement with pointed-arched glazing bars. The right return features a pointed-arched casement on the upper storey with a red brick surround, and the left return has a pointed-arched window on the lower storey, with a wide three-light window above similar to the front.
