Description
The Old Palace is a Grade I listed building located on South Street in West Tarring. It consists of the remains of a 13th-century house with a 15th-century hall, built on the site of Archbishop Becket's Palace. After the Reformation, it was converted into the Rectory and has since been used as the Parish Hall following the construction of a modern Rectory.
The structure is T-shaped and constructed from flint and rubble, featuring stone quoins and frames around the windows and doors. It has a gable at the east end, and the south and west sides are supported by buttresses. The building includes 15th-century two-light windows with cinquefoil heads, stone mullions, and transoms, as well as a 13th-century lancet window in the south wing. The roof is covered with Horsham stone slate, although the upper portion has been renewed with red tiles.
