Description

No 118 on Portland Road is a semi-detached house, likely built around 1800, and possibly constructed alongside No 116, though it has undergone later alterations. The building has two storeys and a basement, featuring two widely spaced, symmetrically arranged sash windows with glazing bars that are larger than those of No 116. These windows are flush and have moulded wooden surrounds, with the left basement window being a Victorian sash and the right a casement. The front is finished in stucco, and there is a parapet that was probably added later.

The house has a later central projection that includes two small round-headed windows on each floor and a door on the south side with six panels, the top four of which are fielded. The north end of the building reveals flint and brick construction. It has a two-span roof, and the rear, or west front, features a modern projecting ground storey with a terrace above, along with a further projection on the north side that abuts premises fronting Portland Street. The upper sashes have two widely spaced windows with glazing bars, and there is an off-centre door leading to the terrace. The stucco is ashlar in style, and the eaves project slightly, supported by small widely spaced brackets.
