Description

Kingsleys is a house, likely dating from the early 16th century and restored in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with exposed rectangular panels filled with plaster, and has a red brick underbuilding to the ground floor on the south side. The left side of the house is tile-hung, while the right side is weather-boarded. The roof is mainly tiled, with the lower four courses formed of Horsham stone slabs. The building follows a T-shaped plan, probably consisting of a three-bay hall with a gabled crossing to the north. It has two storeys and four windows, all 20th-century casements. There is a two-storey canted bay window to the crossing. A large brick stack is located centrally on the ridge, and a gabled, tile-hung dormer is present. A deep eaves cornice, decorated with modillions, runs along the hall. A modern brick and timber gabled porch sits centrally, leading to an early 19th-century six-panelled door (the top four panels being fielded), set within a moulded architrave with a flat head on brackets. The interior, which has not been inspected, includes a roof with side purlins and wind braces, fireplaces, and exposed ceilings with plain beams and joists on both floors. The novelist Henry Kingsley lived at the house for a period.
