Description
Maltman's North and Maltman's South is a late 16th century house that has been subdivided. The southern half, known as Maltman's South, features a ground floor that is refronted with red brick and a first floor that is tile hung with both plain and curved tiles. The northern half, referred to as Maltman's North, retains exposed timber framing with passing braces and plaster infilling. The rear elevation is plastered. The building has a tiled roof that is steeply hipped to the north and half-hipped to the south, with two storeys and attics, and four windows. There are four modern casement windows and two early 20th century doorcases with flat wooden hoods, brackets, and doors flanked by sidelights. The roof includes a large off-central 17th century brick chimney stack and three 19th century stacks, along with one hipped dormer.
Inside Maltman's South, there is an open fireplace that retains the entrance to a bread oven and salt cupboards. It features a chamfered spine beam with lambs tongue stops and an original brick paved floor. Maltman's North has an arched wooden doorcase leading to the hall, a living room with an open fireplace, a chamfered cross beam with lambs tongue stops, and exposed floor joists. The first floor includes jowled posts, sockets for triangular mullions, a shutter groove on the front wall, a midrail, traces of original wall plaster, and wide floorboards.
