Description
The Edith Payne Free Library, formerly known as Queen's Hall, is a hall and library built between 1897 and 1901, located on the west side of Cuckfield High Street. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Horsham stone slab roof in the Elizabethan style. It is two storeys high with a gable front. Each floor has a large mullioned and transomed window, with a blank window in the gable, all adorned with head moulds. There is a moulded band that runs between the floors. The gable is topped with stone coping, a finial, and kneelers that have lozenge decoration, likely inspired by nearby architectural features. The sides of the building have a bracketed eaves cornice.
The right-hand porch is slightly set back and features a late 16th-century style doorcase with a four-centred arch, a mutule frieze, brackets, fluted pilasters with strapwork motifs below, and blank shields and stylized leaves in the spandrels. The porch contains a plank door. Above the door, there is an inscription that reads 'Queen's Hall and Public Library 1897-1901' along with a lamp. Inside, the library includes a staircase with twisted balusters and a hall that features a hammer-beam style roof.
