Description

Brotherhood Hall, located at 9 Church Street, is the original part of Steyning Grammar School. This 15th-century timber-framed building was originally the Brotherhood Hall of the Fraternity of the Holy Trinity, which ceased to exist at the Dissolution. The Grammar School was established here in 1614, and there is a tablet above the doorway inscribed "Brotherhood Hall. Grammar School founded in his native town and endowed AD 1614 by Wm Holland, Alderman of Chichester."

The ground floor has been rebuilt in brick and is now painted. The first floor overhangs on a bressumer and brackets and is now tile-hung, having once been painted, but it has no windows facing the street. Above, there are wide gables featuring ornamental timbering with carved bargeboards, eleven pendants, and five-light casement windows. The roof is made of Horsham slabs.

The central porch is made of red brick and has three storeys, with the ground and first floors dating from 1614, while the top storey with a gable is from the late 19th century. The porch contains a pointed brick archway with a dripstone above and a wrought-iron gate. The inner doorway is set in a moulded architrave surround and features the original door with four vertical panels. To the south-west of the porch are two windows and two doorways, one of which has a four-centred head, moulded jambs, and a lintel. To the north-east of the porch are three windows and a similar blocked doorway.

There are large modern additions behind the building to the south-east, which are not of special interest.
