Description
At the south end of the Causeway, there are two large gate-piers that once served the churchyard, although the gates are now missing. These piers feature moulded bases, rusticated panels, and entablatures that support two cast-iron lamps, one of which is missing from the west pier. Additionally, there are two cast-iron columns, one of which is fluted, that mark the pedestrian entrance to the churchyard. From the east gate-pier, a stone wall extends north-east, enclosing the open spaces around the church and linking the buildings along the Causeway with the church. This wall is constructed of random stone with dressed stone cappings and is likely from the 19th century. The remaining pairs of gate-piers have square stone cappings, some with gabled tops that include trefoils, and all have moulded plinths. The listed buildings in the Causeway are part of a significant group that includes all the listed buildings in Market Square and South Street.
