Description
The Prebendal School, located at No 52 on West Street, is a Gothic building that was renovated in 1830, having originally been re-founded in 1497. This tall, narrow structure retains some medieval features. The northern front is constructed of dressed flints with galletted flint, along with stone quoins and dressings. The building has four storeys, including a cellar or undercroft, and features a parapet with a pointed gable rising from it. There is a stringcourse above the ground floor, and the building has one window bay. The windows are adorned with lattice tracery and pointed panes, set within square-headed stone arches; the attic storey window has two lights with one tier each, while the first-floor window has three lights with two tiers each. A double wooden boarded door is set in a four-centred arch with a stone architrave. There is a round arched opening to the cellar, which is now blocked. The second storey features two original windows with corbels, one of which is blocked, located in the dormitory and passageway. The first floor includes panelling, and there is a turret stairwell located at the south-west. The north front has a semi-circular arched opening to the cellar, which is also blocked. Nos 52 to 56 form a group.
