Description
55 and 56 West Street are 18th-century buildings with a lower roofline and frontage compared to the adjacent No 54. They are two storeys high with an attic and feature a red tiled roof, which is higher at the eastern end. No 56 has three modern dormers. The buildings share a continuous frontage and have a brick dentilled eaves cornice, with painted brick exteriors.
No 55 includes three windows: a bay window with a Venetian design on the ground floor and two ordinary sash windows above. To the west, there are two sash windows on both the ground and first floors, set in reveals with flat arches; these windows retain their glazing bars, and the brick voussoirs above are now painted over. No 56 has three windows on the first floor, which are positioned lower than those in No 55. These windows have flush boxes and intact glazing bars in their upper sections.
In the western part of No 55, there are two doorways featuring panelled pilasters, flat segmental arches, impost moulding, and a dentilled cornice with a blocking course above. The doors are set in panelled reveals and consist of six flush panels topped with flat segmental fanlights that have tracery above.
Nos 52 to 56 form a cohesive group.
